The search of auto-definition as narrative force in Memórias do Cárcere

Abstract

This essay aims at analyzing how the autobiography Memórias do cárcere (Memoirs of prison) is deeply marked by the challenge of Graciliano Ramos´s understanding his role as a Brazilian intellectual of his time. The analysis intends to show how the narrative of his relationship with the other prisoners always has his writing activity as a comparative aspect, which results in a textual form that reveals the contradictions of the very writer, as well as of part of the Brazilian intellectuals at the time.
