Abstract

This article aims at exploring the concepts of both art and the intellectual supported by Mário de Andrade throughout his career. The objective is to analyse how he builds his discourse towards a kind of art that, simultaneously, shows a commitment to the Brazilian culture and possesses aesthetic qualities. By engaging himself in the quest for a Brazilian identity and, at the same time, by revitalizing the presuppositions of the national literature, Mário de Andrade brings together tradition and modernity.
