Of space and men: Group identity and traces of the privatization of space and property in the Neolithic period

For Neolithic age sedentism is inferred from the presence of grouped durable constructions, identified as villages, where traces of activities and food preparation in buildings invite to identify houses and community buildings. The morphology of such structures attests various forms of control of physical access and visual access of people into built spaces, what can be interpreted as material means of privatisation : the patterns of circulation of people in space are invested with meanings such as private and public. Analysis starts from the partitioning of village space then moves to partition its people in groups. Spatial units are identified through successive renewals, social units are identified as inclusive of their past dead and future newborns. The durative conjunction of these two categories serves as basis for the recognition of early forms of inalienable property. The quality of property is discussed against a syntactic model of modern land property, identified as the circulation of spatial units within social space, circulation being described in terms of acquisition, cession and transfer. Analysis concludes that we do not have today sure traces of property during Neolithic times. Certitude about private property of immovable spaces appears with writing, when tablets account for the circulation of immovables between people. Such conclusion may change with future findings and progress in archaeological methods.
