Northeastern Church, Social Pastoral and Liberation Christianity: People's Assembly 2005-2010

Abstract

The current article analyzes the construction of the collective identity of Christians in the People's Assembly. It deals with pastoral and social movements in the states of Pernambuco and Paraíba, placing them in the context of the CNBB NE2 Regional from 2005 to 2010. It reflects about sociology and religion in dialogue with theology. The study also emphasizes the discussion about the liberation christianity expression in the initiative of social pastoral and in the articulation of the People’s Assembly constituting as a cultural political tradition. In conclusion, it discusses the transit between the political and religious fields of the christians participating in this experience, bringing forward questions of ecclesiological and pastoral political nature about the peculiar context of the Catholic Churches of Olinda-Recife and João Pessoa.
