Abstract

When I was appointed Archbishop of São Paulo in 1998, I had the fortune of meeting the Rabbi Henry I. Sobel from CIP (Congregação Israelita Paulista), president of the “Rabinato”, and whom I already had met personally. Since then, we started to support each other in a increasing manner and,in this way, we act jointly to the deepening of the relationship between theCatholic and the Jewish communities in São Paulo. This has a special importancein Brazil, as São Paulo is the biggest and most important Braziliancity, a megalopolis of approximately 18 million inhabitants, certainly the forthmajor urban agglomerate of our planet.
