Abstract

When the “religious question” arose in Brazil, in the 1870s, the relations between the State and ecclesiastical affairs had been shaken owing to the denunciation of two bishops by the conservative cabinet. The imprisonment of the two prelates, who advocated the freedom of thought, but had by principle to obey the emperor, ratified the principle of civil authority. However, this ratification also meant that the alliance between “throne” and “altar” was challenged.
