Abstract

In Psalm 72, the psalmist pleads with God for the future dynasty. His prayer asks for a monarch who knows how to follow the divine standards of justice and righteousness. For this he invokes the divine blessing on the davidic dynasty. To be an instrument of God’s kingship on earth, the monarch must live and act according to divine will (Ps 72:1). The maintenance of peace and prosperity lies in the king’s wisdom in keeping the blessing for many generations, carrying out a government of justice and judgment. The prosperity of the anointed king will be compared to the rain on the meadow, in a life-giving image, which refers to a new rebirth for the people of God (Ps 72:5-6). The ruler will perform great sovereignty over nations, who will be submissive to him and bless him forever. There will be a long period of peace and stability, with a just and prosperous government (Ps 72:9-11). Ps 72 emphasizes qualities and attitudes necessary for the government of a great king. He will live to safeguard the oppressed people (vv.12-13). It will be a government of peace and security for the vulnerable and justice for the wronged (vv.16-17). The psalmist uses the metaphorical expression יִֽירָא֥וּךָ עִם־שָׁ֑מֶשׁ וְלִפְנֵ֥י יָ֜רֵ֗חַ (“They will fear you under the sun and before the moon”) to portray the duration of the king’s rule, a kingdom that will endure in time, similar to “the sun and the moon” (vv.5; 7; 17). Ps 72 portrays a message that goes beyond the reigns of the descendants of Jesse, by referring to the universal and eternal kingdom of a perpetual sovereign.
