Abstract

The present article discusses some contributions of the funeral discourse of Ambrose of Milan for the homily at the celebration of the exequies. Using a bibliographical research, we will begin the study by discussing the funeral rite, first, emphasizing the rescue of his paschal character, and then, the criteria for choosing the biblical texts used and the characteristics of the homily. In the second moment, after making a brief overview of the pagan and christian consolatory theme, we will see the funeral discourses of Ambrose, which not only made use of the act of comforting, but were also impregnated with the christian doctrine about the resurrection. Based on these data, we ask: what is the contribution of Ambrosian preaching in the preparation of the homily to be delivered at the funeral ceremonies? The expected results show that the speeches of the bishop of Milan can increase the liturgical preaching in the mission of providing the bereaved with consolation and instruction on the christian faith in the resurrection
