Abstract

This article aims at making a first approach to the hermeneutics of symbols developed by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. The central problem of this writing concerns the question of evil and human freedom. In his philosophical proposal, Paul Ricoeur postulates a fundamental anthropological duality, namely: the human being as both fallible and capable. Now, even in the face of fallibility, the human being is called upon to assume his humanity, to live in freedom, being able to do good and evil, even doing so involuntarily or without having an express intention. In this way, from the complexity of religious symbols, Ricoeur will find clues to think evil and freedom from an existential, concrete and anthropological horizon.
