Mentions of the “book of life” in the Bible
a theological and introductory study

The Bible alludes to other books, among them the “Book of Life”, one of the quotations receives a considerable role in the book of Revelation (Rev 21:27), as can be seen below: “In it, nothing will ever penetrate anything contaminated, nor what practices abomination and lies, but only those inscribed in the Book of Life [βιβλίῳ τῆς ζωῆς, bibliō tēs zōēs] of the Lamb.” What is called the “Book of Life” (βίβλư τῆς ζωῆς, bibliō tēs zōēs), which also appears in Revelation 20:15, is presented as an important piece in the final judgment, for according to the author, the names of all those who will be saved would be recorded in it. In this context, would there be in the Bible subsidies that can help in the knowledge of the nature, meaning, and theological functions of this book? This research aims to recap the main texts of the Bible that mention the “Book of Life”, observing possible contextual notes about its nature, meaning, and theological functions. This brief study will be developed in light of the method of historical-canonical-grammatical approach to biblical interpretation, together with the bibliographic review research method. Efforts will be made to (1) identify the main Old Testament texts that mention the “Book of Life”, observing possible indications of their nature and theological functions; then the same intent will be reproduced in an attempt to (2) identify the main New Testament texts that would mention this book. Finally, (3) the main theological perspectives on the nature, meaning, and function of the book of life in the Christian and Adventist world will be recapitulated.
