Abstract

The article explores the relationship between economics and theology, highlighting how theological principles can inspire economic practices oriented toward the common good. The text reflects on the origin of the term 'economy' in Ancient Greece, evolving into a science focused on resource management, but which, over time, lost its connection to ethical and social values. The study is justified by the need to rethink the ethical foundations of economics in light of contemporary challenges such as social inequality and environmental degradation. The central issue is the disconnect between modern economic practices—often individualistic—and the promotion of the common good. The hypothesis suggests that integrating theological principles, such as the economy of salvation, may offer an alternative and sustainable model. The objectives include investigating the evolution of the concept of economy, relating it to the economy of salvation, and proposing economic practices based on communion and sustainability. The methodology is qualitative, involving an interdisciplinary bibliographic review, engaging with classical and contemporary authors as well as Church documents. The results point to the feasibility of alternative economic models, such as Chiara Lubich’s Economy of Communion and Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics, which align social justice with environmental sustainability. The conclusion reaffirms that economics, when grounded in human dignity and the ethics of care, can be a tool for social transformation. The economy of salvation, inspired by Trinitarian logic, offers a model that harmonizes material and spiritual aspects, promoting a new civilization of love and the common good.
