Abstract

This article aims to reclaim the figure of Pope Francis (2013-2025) as a Bishop of Rome who inaugurated a different modus operandi in the exercise of the Petrine ministry, leaving a challenge for his successor. To this end, it first reviews the historical development of how the papacy has consolidated itself throughout history and assumed different forms, then presents the specific elements of reforms carried out by Bergoglio, and finally presents him not as a mere bureaucrat, but above all as a shepherd. In practice, the intention is to present Francis as the initiator of a different process in the way of being Pope, which is why his successor has the enormous challenge of carrying forward the reforms he began.

Tiago Cosmo da Silva Dias, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)

PhD in Theology (2025) from the Graduate Studies Program in Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). Participates in the Research Group 'Religion and Politics in Contemporary Brazil' (PUC-SP/CNPq). Professor at the Dehonian Faculty, in Taubaté; at the Paulo VI Faculty of Philosophy and Theology, in Mogi das Cruzes; and at the São Miguel Institute of Theology, in São Paulo. Master in Theology (2022) Systematics in the Graduate Studies Program in Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), having studied with a scholarship from CAPES/PROSUC. Has a lato sensu postgraduate degree in Culture and Media: a theoretical-practical approach (2020), from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), and in Religion and Culture (2018) from the Assunção University Center (Unifai). He has a degree in Theology (2018) and Philosophy (2014), from Faculdade Paulo VI, in Mogi das Cruzes; and in Social Communication, with a specialization in Journalism, from Universidade Nove de Julho (2009).
