Abstract

The Catholic Counter-Reformation, arising from the confrontation with the Protestant Reformation, elaborates within the Jesuit Order the pedagogy of the Ratio Studiorum which, inspired by the spirit of the scholastic Trivium, goes back to the humanism of the Greco-Latin classics, to devitalize and instrumentalize them in the service of a “Christianized” Rhetoric, for the purpose of a redressement of Catholic praxis in the context of threatened Christianity.
