Identification of strategies in the therapeutic process of a hearing impaired child
Keywords:
hearing impairment, (re)habilitation, therapeutic processAbstract
Auditory screening programs at birth and early diagnosis of hearing impaired children brought babies and very young children to habilitation programs, introducing new dimensions to the practice of speech pathologists and audiologists. Programs aiming at oral language acquisition have stressed the importance of maximum utilization of residual hearing since birth. This is an area in need of research that can contribute to new procedures to deal with this young population. The present study describes and discusses the therapeutic process of hearing impaired children using a case study design. It discusses the issues involved in auditory and language development. Theoretical and practical issues are raised, particularly those related to the clinical method. Specific aspects of the strategies used with hearing impaired children are discussed through the analysis of videotaped sessions, particularly the interaction of theory, practice and the role of playing during therapy.Downloads
