Abstract

This work is part of a final dissertation written as part of the Speech Language Therapy Program of Univali. Based on two clinical models which are discussed in the literature of the area-objectivity and subjectivity-the objective of this research was to identify the clinical concept that forms the basis of the speech language therapy intervention carried out among children with language symptoms who attended the Clinical Speech Language Therapy Department of the University of Vale do Itajai – Univali. For this purpose, the study was based on qualitative perspective. The data collection tools were: interviews with a total of 6 subjects, including students on the 8th semester carrying out their practical training period and recently-graduated professionals from the course, and analysis of documents, namely, the records created by the interviewees during the Supervised Practical Training Period in Speech Language Therapy. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the research was guided by the categories why and how the research subjects carry out interventions with the parents of children with language symptoms. Baring in mind that this work is only part of a complete dissertation, this article presents only the analysis of the category why, which reveals the following reasons for which the research subjects carry out interventions with the parents: the fact that the family is the first social institution in which the child is included, the short duration of the sessions and the need of the subjects interviewed to explain to the parents what takes place during the speech therapy sessions. It was observed during the course of the research, that these interventions with parents are based on the referentials of the clinic of objectivity.
