Short term learning effects in a test of speechreading
Keywords:
Speechreading, hearing-impaired, short-term learning effectsAbstract
The short-term learning effects were investigated when inexperienced normally hearing speechreaders were exposed to five sentence sets from the CUNY topic related sentences. The subjects were 12 young adults (6 males and 6 females). All were native speakers of English with normal hearing and normal or corrected-to-normal visual acuity. The sentences were presented by the experimenter from a VCR cassette, on a standard TV monitor and the subjects’ responses were recorded and scored by the examiners. In terms of number of words correct, no significant learning effect was found in this study; but a significant effect of sentence length was found, shorter sentences being received more accurately than longer sentences.Downloads
