Abstract

Introduction: It is well known that children are often invited to draw in the speech and language clinical setting, despite the fact that drawing production has not received the attention it deserves by speech and language researchers. Objective: In the literature, drawing is rarely studied, even though it is often proposed in clinical practice. From the standpoint of the almost total absence of studies on the use of drawing in speech and language therapy sessions, this study aimed to ask therapists how they use drawing as a clinical tool. Method: Five clinical therapists, six university teachers and three undergraduate students in speech and language therapy were interviewed. Results: All reported that they use drawing and consider it to be an important tool in clinical practice with children, although their aims varied considerably, depending on the theoretical approach these professionals espoused. The majority of the subjects reported that they had not learned about children’s drawing in their undergraduate coursework. Discussion: The results of this project point to the need for further studies of children’s graphic production in the field of speech and language therapy, beginning at the undergraduate level.
