Objective: to investigate the reliability and consensus between judges of the use of a voice evaluation protocol based on a phonetic model for the description of voice quality (VPAS, 2000). Methods: 14 judges were selected and attended a 2O-hour course on phonetic analysis of voice quality, in which they analyzed the voice samples from two speakers by means of VPAS in the first pass (identification of presence /absence of settings). Their judgments were compared to those by two judges fully familiar with the profile (taken as reference), from which a second group of seven judges was formed to perform the second pass on VPAS (judge the vocal settings on a 1 to 6 scalar degree). Judges selected to second pass also answered a survey. The results were analyzed by means of qualitative analysis by comparing the judgments by both the experimental group and the reference group. Results: the results were presented and discussed as to the recital and applicability of the script, pointing , in decreasing order, to a consensus with respect to the groups of supralaryngeal transversal, longitudinal, velopharyngeal and phonatory settings. Conclusion: the reliability of phonetic description of the voice quality model was reinforced, as well as the need for providing judges with a more thorough grounding in instructions for VPAS profile application.Downloads
