Abstract

This article addresses the prohibition of conversion therapies in Brazil, practices aimed at altering the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQIA+ individuals, and analyzes the legal, psychological, and social implications of such practices. Although the prohibition has been established through the Federal Council of Psychology's Resolution (1999) and a 2023 ruling by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), challenges remain in its implementation due to cultural and religious resistance, as well as the continuation of underground practices. Through a critical analysis, the article proposes that Brazil adopt specific legislation criminalizing these therapies, create public policies for victim support, and implement educational strategies to combat stigma. The analysis also emphasizes the importance of an intersectional approach, considering the multiple vulnerabilities faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in terms of class and race. Finally, it argues that, to effectively eradicate conversion therapies, a joint effort between the legal system, public policies, and social awareness is necessary to build a more inclusive society that respects sexual and gender diversity.
