This article investigates the tension between totalitarianism and democracy in contemporary times, drawing on the work of Hannah Arendt and her concepts of terror, ideology, and domination, and relates them to the political context in Brazil between 2020 and 2025. It analyzes the use of law as an instrument both for the erosion and defense of democratic institutions, especially in the face of phenomena such as Bolsonarism, attacks on the judiciary, fake news, and political radicalization. It discusses how globalization, digital networks, and religious extremism have influenced the political process, and the role of actors such as the STF (Supreme Federal Court), TSE (Superior Electoral Court), and authoritarian movements. Despite latent totalitarian threats, Brazil has shown signs of democratic resilience, supported by legal and institutional strategies.
