Resumo

O objetivo deste artigo é investigar o impacto das ideias de Rudolph Hermann Lotze sobre William James. O artigo demonstrará que diversos conceitos centrais em *The Principles of Psychology* (1890), de James, foram inspirados pela obra de Lotze. Ambos os autores concordam, de maneira notável, que a psicologia não é uma ciência natural. Eles expressam uma crítica contundente à psicologia científica e à concepção associacionista da mente. Os argumentos de Lotze também fundamentam as teorias de James sobre a ação ideo-motora, as emoções e os sinais locais. Em resumo, James apoia-se fortemente na filosofia de Lotze para formular muitas das teses originais presentes em The Principles of Psychology.
