ResumoThe concepts of “inner speech” and “external speech” proposed by Vygotsky have been fostering a series of investigations not only in the area of language acquisition, but also in studies about the literacy process. Such concepts plus other Vygotskyan concepts like the notion of “sense” and “meaning” were the theorical basis for the analysis of the language acquisition data in this study. The data qere collected in a private school in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, and the subjects age ranged between two to five. This research aimed to analyse the words created by these children in a natural school environment. Based on Vygotskyan concepts it was possible to see that there is a new way to understand the process of creation not only for new lexical items, but also for new meanings of lexical items that at first seem to beknown.
