Abstract

The objective of this research was to profile the chronically ill elderly assistance and know the difficulties in attention given to the elderly in everyday life. We conducted a descriptive study using a qualitative approach. Study participants were 19 family caregivers of the elderly, where it was applied a questionnaire with open questions which were later analyzed. Most caregivers are women, daughters or spouses, with a mean age of 53 years, who take on this task in the bond of kinship or affection. The main difficulties mentioned refer to difficulties in handling and hygiene of the elderly, live with the changes in the behavior of the elderly, lack of support from other family members, financial difficulties and frequency of visit of the healthcare team.
