Confronting intrafamily violence against older people by health professionals

Descriptive, exploratory research, of qualitative nature, which aims to: describe the practices developed by health professionals from the Family Health Units in the care of older people in situations of intrafamily violence and identify the challenges faced by these health professionals on this scenario, in the municipality of Jequié (Bahia, Brazil), in the year 2012. The categories revealed that the strategies used by community health workers, nurses and nursing technicians, in fighting violence against older people are home visits, dialogue and referrals to relevant authorities. The difficulties pointed out were resistance of the involved individuals; fear of exposure and reprisal by family and community, as well as access difficult to competent authorities.
