The aim of this paper is to analyze: 1) couple relationships –its support functions and relationship characteristics– and its differences by gender and 2) changes that are produced in that relationship and in sexual activity in older heterosexual adults. The sample included adults from 65 to 85 years old and it was intentionally selected. Data has been collected by structured and semi-structured interviews. Results obtained by quantitative and qualitative analysis show that couple relationship in older age fulfills functions such as emotional support, companionship and cognitive advice. Analysis by gender shows significant differences in 4 of 5 support functions that were explored. Among the changes produced in older age, the decrease of sexual activity frequency appears in the first place, though satisfaction level is maintained; and fellowship, mutual care and positive affect in relation to the partner increase.
