This research sought to comprehend the narratives of illness in a group of elderly people diagnosed with some type of cancer, living in the city of São Paulo, SP, and attached to a health plan in said city. Through semi-structured interviews, a total of 14 people was interviewed, being divided equally between men and women. By their reasoning, it can be observed that cancer is still a stigmatizing disease, associated with death. The importance of social, cultural, religious and psychological aspects in dealing with the disease, as well as a rich therapeutic itinerary, were highlighted.
