A comparative approach to the economic participation of older adults: the case of the city of Monterrey and Mexico State

Abstract

The issue of economic participation of over 65 years in Mexico has attracted particular interest due mainly to high rates of participation that holds this age group. Most national and regional research agrees that the social protection system is a key determinant for the decision to participate or not in the labor market by older adults. However, the comparison of different scenarios is not yet widely used practice in this area and do not know deeply the dynamics of this phenomenon. Using two different data sources, this paper intends to compare the employment status of older adults in the state of Mexico and Monterrey, with the ultimate aim of inquiring about the specifics of the phenomenon.

Author Biographies

Raúl E. López

Es originario de Chilpancingo Guerrero, México. Es economista, graduado en la Universidad Autónoma de México; Maestría, Doctorado y Postdoctorado en antropología social de la Universidad Laval de Québec, Canadá. En la enseñanza, ha sido profesor en el Departamento de Antropología de la Universidad Laval y desde hace dieciséis años es profesor de tiempo completo en la Subdirección de Postgrado de la Facultad de Trabajo Social y Desarrollo Humano de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Como investigador se ha desempeñado en México, Canadá, Costa Rica, Perú, Colombia y Ecuador. Sus libros y artículos abordan la temática del desarrollo social regional y la pobreza. Actualmente es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores en México.

Fernando Bruno

Inició sus estudios en sociología en la Universidad de Buenos Aires y continuo la maestría sobre la misma especialidad en la Universidad de Provece en Francia. Se encuentra actualmente en el tercer año Doctoral en el área de posgrado de la Facultad de Trabajo Social y Desarrollo Humano de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Sus áreas de estudio son mercado de trabajo y vejez.
