ABSTRACT: The present study objective to investigate the possible relationship between quality of life and functional independence in institutionalized elderly in Santa Maria, RS. This is an observational, cross-sectional, quantitative study carried out in six long-term philanthropic and private institutions, located in the municipality of Santa Maria, RS. After approval by the Ethics and Human Research Committee of the Federal University of Santa Maria (opinion nº. 1.737.474), the WHOQOL-bref questionnaire and Katz Index were used. Health satisfaction (WHOQOL-bref) showed a moderate negative correlation with functional independence (Katz index), that is, the more satisfied the patient was with health, the greater his functional independence.
