Abstract

During the democratic opening a new generation of black activists emerges into the publicspace, both in dialogue with and contrasting with the socialist left. The alternative press of thetime is the privileged space to analyze a tense debate that mobilizes the discursive repertoirerelating race to class. From this perspective, I investigate how this debate was portrayed in animportant alternative newspaper called Versus and I identify the privileged interlocutors of thissocialist generation that sought to intellectually articulate the ideas of race and class in thecontext of struggles for the democratization of Brazil.
