The social dynamic of favelas in the São Paulo metropolitan area

Abstract

This paper is inserted in the debate about the living conditions of the population that resides in the favelas of the São Paulo metropolitan area. By means of the results collected from a survey carried out by the Center for Studies of the Metropolis (Centro de Estudo da Metrópole — CEM), the growth of favelas in the analyzed region, as well as several other indicators that show the transformation of the social content of their dwellers are presented. Due to the heterogeneity of the situations found, a typology based on the characteristics of favelas and district mapping, which makes it possible for conclusions to be drawn about the territorial dynamic of the favelas, is then built.
