Abstract

The article attempts to understand the choice made by the Brazilian press to represent the composer Geraldo Vandré as a symbol of protest against the military dictatorship. The reconstitution of some aspects of its history was essential for this approach. Through it we noticed the occurrence of several events that turned him into a myth: his attachment to the engaged art of the 60`s; the composition of the song Pra não dizer que não falei das flores (Not to say that I did not talk about the flowers), popularly known as “Caminhando” (Walking), at a moment of worsening of the crash between the military government and the left; the following pursuit to the composer, his exile, his traumatic return to Brazil and the premature close of his career. The article also brings elements that allow the evocation of memory concerning the social consequences caused by the military dictatorship.
