Abstract

The concept of human rights currently diffused at the multilateral level has gained momentum after the end of World War II, but the key concepts of this regime are grounded in the Declarations resulting from the liberal revolutions of the 18th century. However, these documents have also raised a number of criticisms of its core concepts, which today base the arguments that drive the accusations of cultural imperialism in the multilateral human rights regime. Thus, this work seeks to introduce some of the historical and traditional criticisms of the concept of human rights to investigate the bases of the accusations on cultural imperialism currently diffused. The hypothesis is that the traditional criticism of the universalist view supports the perception that this approach does not take into account that human rights can be a rhetoric used by the Western powers to impose their values on other civilizations as a way of maintaining their power and influence.
