Syrian refugees in São Paulo: between hospitality and intolerance

The main objective of this article is to analyze the extent to which Syrian refugees are prejudiced against in São Paulo. Qualitative methods are adopted, consisting of interviews with Syrian refugees, resettlement professionals of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and members of the Syrian-Lebanese community. The results show that their reception is ambiguous. On the one hand, Brazilians are welcoming Syrians. On the other hand, some Syrians experienced xenophobia – mainly Muslims.Downloads
