Abstract

This article aims the relationship between the hawker and the State. Against the false idea of absence in this sector, we will show how it operates in an authoritarian and policeman control, reinforcing the issue of social inequality, accentuating the marginality of informal workers. To add to the theoretical field, we will use the empirical case of street hawker in downtown João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba, which, unlike other groups that make up the informal sector within cities, it undergoes constant repressive measures in contemporary. In view of the above, it is understood not only the authoritarianism rooted in decision making processes of the State, but also the resistance, in the face of the constant conflicts established, built by the working class in this specific case, street hawker.
