Abstract

The article aims to discuss the notion of “Latin America”. After briefly passing through the origins of the concept and its diverse uses throughout history, we will try to defend the possibility of a vision of America that departs from the native peoples. How would Amerindian thought conceive our subcontinent? From what assumptions? What, in short, would Caliban’s vision of himself and his island be, to speak of the Shakespearean metaphor? Our suggestion will be that from Amerindian reflection we can propose a broader notion of Latin America, one capable of embracing difference and the Other, as opposed to the recurring vision of a white and elitist Latin America.
