Jesus’ attitudes towards temptations

A moral and spiritual paradigm in times of crisis

Abstract

This research is developed from a theoretical-bibliographical approach, having as its object the synoptic gospel narratives (Mt 4,1-11; Lc 4,1-13; Mc 1,12-13). The research problem focuses on understanding how Jesus’ responses to the temptations in the desert can serve as a moral and spiritual model for contemporary humanity, especially in contexts of crisis, in which ethical values and emotional stability are threatened. The hypothesis formulated proposes that Jesus’ attitudes configure a paradigm of resistance based on obedience to the divine will and self-control, which promotes an inner freedom capable of sustaining a mature and balanced spiritual life in the face of adversity. The objectives of the research are, firstly, to analyze Jesus’ behavior in the face of three temptations – immediate gratification, the search for power and self-sufficiency –, highlighting the centrality of trust in the Word of God and in the filial relationship with the Father; Secondly, it seeks to reflect on the relevance of this moral and spiritual paradigm for facing contemporary crises, especially with regard to the temptation of ethical relativism and the search for quick and superficial solutions. The research also aims to highlight the importance of suffering and trials as formative elements of human character, emphasizing that resistance to temptations does not consist of rejecting possessions or life, but in a continuous exercise of discernment and balance based on divine grace. It is based on the premise that Jesus’ example in the desert remains a guide for contemporary Christians, as it indicates that overcoming temptations and building moral character are processes that involve openness to grace, constant spiritual practice and self-control.
