The present article intends to present the debate between the Russian authorsFyodor Dostoevsky and Nikolai Chernyshevsky realized in Russia in the 1860s. Presenting
different theses, Dostoevsky develops a perspective of the human condition based on the
Orthodox Christianity experienced by the peasants. On the other side, Chernyshevsky
maintains a rationalist and utilitarian view of the human, meeting under the title of "rational
selfishness." Along this debate, the hypothesis to be justified consists in the possibility of
deducing a religious anthropology elaborated by Dostoevsky, in which the notion of freedom
is understood in the midst of religious concerns.
