Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between myth and history in Ricoeur's narrative theory, relating it to the way theology traditionally considered this issue. The article demonstrates how Ricoeur's approach offers a counterpoint to both the paradigm brought to biblical narrative studies by Bultmann's demitologizing, as well as for recent theological efforts to separate the biblical account from any mythological character, attributing to it a historical quality seen in terms of scientific historiography. Under this scenario, Paul Ricoeur rescues the question of myth by questioning a dichotomy long established between myth and history. This undertaking is seen by Ricoeur as essential to the whole project of his narrative theory, offering many direct implications for contemporary theological reflections. The work follows a theoretical methodology of literature review from texts by Paul Ricoeur and other thinkers, such as Vanhoozer, Stiver, and Pellauer.
