Evangelicals and the left in the 1994 elections

Abstract

The period 1980 — 1989 saw the return of democracy together with a deepening of the socio-economic crisis, creating the conditions for a marked increase in political consciousness within Brazilian society. The protestant community was involved in this process, abandoning its policy of non-involvement, and moving into the political scene. Those groups which adopted a Holistic Theology found themselves on the same platform as the Popular Democrats. This new Christian left is theologically conservative, yet its political stance is progressive. The 1994 elections revealed a new level of organization of this Christian Left, opening the door to new possibilities for the political future of the protestant community and its commitment to social justice in Brazil.
