Abstract

This paper offers an introduction to general aspects of the moral and political philosophy of trust and distrust, emphasizing its relation to the tradition of liberalism. It presents the main approaches to the question of trust in the history of modern thought: the ethics of trust in recent feminist literature; the sociology of trust and the idea of trust in institutions; the underlying theme of distrust, through an analysis of the works of Hobbes and Locke; and more recent approaches based on the work of Tocqueville. Finally, it problematizes the recent positive appreciation of distrust in the liberal tradition
