Abstract

This article aims to analyze Hans Jonas’s thoughts on the medical profession to clarify the affinity with current “Medical Humanities.” This leads to a second strand, which is the identification of three key concepts: “reflexivity,” “relation,” and “care,” which will be analyzed in light of the philosophical proposals of John Dewey, Donald Schön, Seyla Benhabib, and Joan Tronto. The goal is to demonstrate that these notions are relevant for redefining the medical profession in the current era, as they offer a theoretical-practical tool capable, on the one hand of deconstructing problematic cultural habits, such as modern technicist reductionism, and, on the other hand, contributing to the reformulation of medical practice in a more relational, engaged, attentive, and circumstance-sensitive manner.
