Lying in psychoanalysis

This work examines the particular way in which psychoanalytic discourse – understood here as the coextensive dimensions of a field of knowledge and a concrete experience – conceives of and operates with the dimension of lying, never dissociating it from the problem of truth, its essential counterpoint in a perspective that is simultaneously dialectical and unconscious. A methodological issue arises as a preliminary to the entire discussion: the distinction between lying as an essential dimension of truth, in a dialectical conception and as an imposition of the unconscious itself, and lying as a deliberate refusal of truth, devoid of any dialectical framework – lying as a vile and fascist human practice. The author then examines different aspects of psychoanalytic knowledge and experience in which the dimension of lying is present, highlighting its particular manifestations in each of the aspects considered.
