Abstract

ABSTRACT Chagas' disease is a neglected disease. Major pharmaceutical companies are not interested in researching new drugs which are not commonly sold and reach only a small population of economically excluded people. In Brazil, only Benzonidazol is available for treatment. Whereas for the acute disease there is no doubt as to its effectiveness, for the chronic phase opinions are not unanimous. The aim of this study was to review the literature on the subject. This issue is relevant due to its endemic profile in Latin America and the lack of review articles on the subject. Despite the fact that the parasite is not completely eradicated through treatment, it is believed that treatment during the chronic infection can prevent the development of severe cardiomyopathy.
