ABSTRACTIntroduction: adhesions are one of the main postoperative intra-abdominal complications with high morbidity and costs, due to their frequent readmissions and reoperations and mortality of 3% - 10%. Purpose: to induce meconium peritonitis and hence peritoneal adhesions in Wistar rats, and subsequently use polyethylene glycol and cold saline solution to prevent the formation of these complications. Method: the sample consisted of 47 Wistar rats which were equally divided into ten groups. A meconium solution was inoculated intra-peritoneally in order to simulate meconium peritonitis and intra-abdominal adhesions. We used various concentrations of meconium solution, exposure time, volume infused and day of operation to analyze the abdominal cavity. Result: all rats in groups I, II, IX and X and 50% of group VIII died the day after infusion of 1 mL at concentrations of 50%, 40%, 10% and 20%, respectively. The other groups (III, IV, V, VI, VII and VIII of 50%) survived until day 3 post inoculation in which they were euthanized. No signs of inflammation or intraperitoneal adhesion were identified in any group. Conclusion: it is assumed that the dosage, volume and concentration of meconium solution used was not sufficient to establish an experimental model of peritonitis meconium and intra-abdominal adhesions. It is recommended that other concentrations and other doses of meconium solution be used, or other methods for the induction of adhesion than meconium peritonitis, in order to perform such study.
