Sudden hearing loss and neoplasic infiltration of central nervous system as complications of chronic myeloid leukemia

ABSTRACT Objective: To relate a case of bilateral sudden deafness and neoplasic infiltration of central nervous system as complications of the chronic myeloid leukemia. Methodology: Sudden hearing loss and blastic infiltration of central nervous system rare occurs in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. The deafness in the chronic myeloid leukemia was first described for Donne in 1844. Politzer, in 1885, was the first one to carry through histologics studies in temporal bones of patients with deafness associated with the leukemia. In 1945, Druss told hemorrhage of the internal ear, infection and leukemic infiltration as possible causes of sudden deafness in patients with leukemia. Later, in 1985, Baer added plus a cause - the hyperviscosity syndrome. Discussion: The authors report the case of one lady of 62 years with chronic myeloid leukemia that sudden deafness presented initially unilateral, but later bilateral, and neurological manifestations, as chronic headache, vomits, movements' loss in lower limbs, sleepiness and mental confusion. Hematological findings of the patient reviewed 370,000 white blood cell/mL and 26% of blasts. Cerebrospinal fluid examination reviewed infiltration of the marrow for neoplasic cells.Downloads
