ABSTRACT Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the experience acquired through the implementation of a protocol for the assessment and management of acute postoperative pain in the Postanesthesia Care Unit (PACU) of a tertiary hospital in Sorocaba. Methods: nursing staff involved in the process were trained to apply an 11 - point pain scale to patients undergoing general anesthesia. Results: of the subjects, 20.6% presented pain of an intensity > 4 and median time to resolution of pain was 30 minutes. There were no increased incidences of nausea/vomiting and hypoxemia. Conclusion: experience with implementation of the protocol allowed us to establish a scenario on the incidence of pain in the PACU, the need of evaluating the adequacy of the processes for the management of acute pain and to understand the occurrence of adverse events related to analgesic therapy.Downloads
