Flattening of the ST-segment of the electrocardiogram

Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective: to define the incidence of the flattening of the ST-segment of the electrocardiogram (ECG) and to clarify its meaning and cause. Methods: one hundred and thirty electrocardiogram tracings from patients with different clinical diagnostics were analyzed. The Kappa Test of concordance and the Chi-Square Test were used for statistical analysis. Results: flattening of the ST-segment was found in 78 tracings (60%) and had no statistical correlation with any specific clinical diagnosis. Conclusion: the authors concluded that the flattening of the ST-segment represents a delay in ventricular repolarization which may lead to an incomplete repolarization, caused by different pathogens that would be captured by the derivation of the ECG corresponding to the affected area of the myocardium.
