The Pirate and Captain Paulo. By George Sand and Alexandre Dumas – Memory and Edition in Brazil

Abstract

In this article, we worked on two French novels: one entitled O Pirata [The Pirate] (by George Sand) and, the other, O Capitão Paulo [Captain Paulo] (by Alexandre Dumas). Both of them were published in Brazil, in Portuguese, during the 1840s. For the first once, we managed to get the first original edition dated from 1841; of the other one, we obtained an interesting edition of 1936. Therefore, our approach focuses on an interesting mode of reading, through which we could comprehend not only the text of these authors in itself, but also the “text” of their Brazilian publishers, in their “editorial translations”, in terms of culture and memory.
