This article is a canonical and structural study of Psalm 85 with an emphasis on its theological dimension. Ps 85 belongs to the Third Book of the Psalter (Ps 73-89). It is not properly a lamentation nor does it have a cultic Sitz im Leben: in fact, it is a sapiential reflexion on the word of God in a time of crisis. The author identifies this time with the return from the Babylonian exile so that our psalm is a fitting parallel to Ps 126. Ps 85 has two songs: the first one presents the lamentation of Israel (vv. 2-8), the second, the answer of God through the voice of the psalmist (vv. 9-14). Each song has two strophes: vv. 2-4.5-8 and 9-10.11-14, respectively. The first strophe remembers the joy of the return, when the love of God for his people was evident (vv. 2-4). The second one contrasts it with the present situation, apparently characterized by the anger of God (vv. 5-8). In the third strophe (vv. 9-10), God paints a future of peace for his people, but his project could be nullified by their stubbornness. In the last strophe (vv. 11-14), God says that a day will come when his project will at last be realized because the love of God and the love of humans will meet together. For Christians, this day was the birth of Jesus, but the project of God is not yet fully accomplished.
