Appraisal, engagement and valuation

Abstract

Within the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework, this text is a reply to Souza (2011), and the aspects discussed by the author on the concept of instantiation as well as the translation of some terms of the Appraisal system (Martin & White, 2005) into Portuguese as suggested by Vian Jr (2009). The aim is to (1) strengthen the arguments presented in Vian Jr (2009) for the terms avaliatividade, engajamento and valoração as the corresponding translations for appraisal, engagement and valuation on the one hand and, on the other, (2) point to the inconsistencies in Souza’s text (2011), as well as her positions regarding the theory.
